Got up, stood up.
Roll up, roll up for SpunOut.ie’s 2ND ever ever ever extravaganza of activism, taking place on the 17/18/19 of June in Dublin's fair city.
It has taken us nearly a year to come down from the BUZZ of last year’s Academy of Activism (click heck to see what went on last year) but we’ve been busy, oh have we been busy.
And what a year it has been! What with non violent youth led revolutions succeeding in Egypt and Tunisia; the IMF and the ECB getting jiggy with us here in Ireland; an election over and done with; youth unemployment spiralling; the Civil Partnerships Bill getting through; and all sorts of brilliant grass roots initiatives stirring things up.
People, we have things to discuss.
If like us here at SpunOut.ie you’re still getting your head around half of these changes and wondering what they mean, what new possibilities they open up for us, and how to get stuck in to changing our corner of the world for the better, then we invite you to apply NOW for this year’s Academy of Activism. For anyone who doesn’t know what it is, SpunOut.ie is offering a lucky 15 of you a place on a free of charge, expenses paid* training course in how to change things and get stuff done.
What is it?
Don’t worry any of you who dread going into a ‘class room’ during the summer break. This is not, I repeat, IS NOT School.
Think more of a Guerrilla training camp combined with one of those brilliant late night change-the-world conversations and then you’ll be close. We have roped in some of our most impressive activist heroes and heroines, a few media mogul-y-types, a scattering of film-makers and even a couple of politicians (no groaning!) to share their ideas and know-how with you.
Over an intensive 2.5 days in Dublin, we'll give all the selected participants a chance to pick the brains of these people, to steal their expertise and maybe even pass on some of your own to them. As well as the guests, we have gathered up the best campaign and change-maker examples we know of, from organisations and people all over the world. And the best books and resources we know of on how to change your world and mind yourself whilst doing it and we’ll be giving them to you at the Academy.
So if you want to learn things like:
- How to use the media or even better how to make your own
- When and how to lobby politicians
- When will it work to use street theatre and what use is a petition anyway
- How to organise a campaign to give it the best chance of success
- How to get politicians working for you (we pay them you know!!) or when to forget about them and just make things happen yourself!!
- How to run events and publicise them
- How to work in groups and speak in public
- What’s going on in this country right now activism wise...
...then our Academy is for YOU!
Applications CLOSE on Monday 30th May so get going y’all! Fill in your application; tell us why you want to be on this course and what you want to do after you’ve done it.
