Indymedia is an independent media outlet and website, composed of media groups around the world. Its aim is to provide a radical, unbiased and independent voice, free from the shackles of the traditional corporate run media. In this way, Indymedia wants to contribute towards a better world.
The original Independent Media Centre was established in Seattle in the U.S in 1999 to provide coverage of the WTO protests that were going on at that time. The centre was used as a clearinghouse for journalists to store their pictures, videos, articles and audio footage and the footage was eventually used to make a series of five documentaries.
The centre grew over the next few years and its work has been featured on a variety of sites such as CNN.com and BBC online. Indymedia now has outlets in the U.K, Canada, Mexico, Prague, Belgium, France, and Italy, with more to come.
