Get OOOOBY
Cheap local veggie scheme.
OOOOBY ("Out Of Our Own Back Yard") is a local food initiative that was originally set up by Carraig Dúlra farm in Glenealy village, Co Wicklow as a way to try and sell local produce, food growing supplies, ecological products and crafts. It started with a simple vegetable box scheme, whereby locals could arrange to collect local veg from farmers in their area. It has flourished since then and OOOOBY are currently opening the scheme up to new members for 2011.
Once you sign up to the scheme, you can collect your veggie box each Saturday. The main collection point is currently the OOOOBY Store in Glenealy, and OOOOBY will also help members from the same area link up, so that you can reduce car journeys by sharing collections with others living in your area.
All of the veg is grown locally and everything is absolutely fresh. The producers will always be on hand to provide information about how they raise their veg, so you know what's being used in their garden/farm/plot. 80% of the money you pay for your veggie box goes direct to the producers and the remaining 20% is to cover OOOOBY costs. Anything left after that will be used towards community/school education around food.
Membership of the scheme costs €30 and each jam packed box only costs €10!
Demand for the boxes was very high last year, so do sign up soon. The first boxes will be available on Saturday June 11th.
