GM Free Ireland
Taking the scary stuff out of food.
What is GM Free food and GM-Free Ireland?
Genetically modified foods are foods that have had their structure ‘modified’ or changed so as to become bigger/better or contain more of certain nutrients. Scientists have been cross breeding plants for years; but the difference now is that is that scientists are directly injecting plants with DNA from other species.
There have been many criticisms lobbied against GM foods. Firstly, there is the very real danger of allergic responses. For example, what if a child with a nut allergy eats an apple that was genetically modified with a brazil nut? Secondly, there is concern about the effect GM foods have on health. Since some crops are modified using the DNA from viruses and bacteria there is concern that new and antibiotic resistant diseases could develop. There are also complex environmental concerns.
What is this campaign all about?
GM–Free Ireland is an association of various companies and individuals working together to try and keep Ireland GM free. GM-Free Ireland does not want Ireland to have any GMO algae, bacteria, viruses, crops, seeds, trees, insects, fish, poultry or livestock. They are calling for a phase out of GM animal feed used in Ireland and for compulsory labelling of GM foods.
