Grow it Yourself: Volunteers needed

Hands on, hands getting down and dirty!

GIY (Grow it Yourself) is a not for profit organisation that aims to inspire people from all walks of life, and of all ages, to grow their own food and to provide them with the practical skills they need to do so successfully. The organisation was established by journalist and social entrepreneur Michael Kelly. Patrons include Diarmuid Gavin, Darina Allen and Clodagh McKenna.

GIY aims to take the ‘self’ out of ‘self-sufficiency’ by getting amateur growers together, so that they can learn skills from each other and connect with like-minded individuals. This is done through GIY groups that meet in local communities and via GIY’s social network

The aim is to establish a GIY group in every community in Ireland and to establish groups overseas. There are now nearly 60 GIY groups in Ireland, which are run voluntarily by a local steering group. Between the groups and the online network, there are approximately 5,000 people involved. The meetings and memberships are free of charge, and open to all – beginners and experts, young and old.

As the organisation grows, GIY have a need for volunteers to help establish, run, manage and coordinate the groups around Ireland and to work on various GIY projects each year, such as fundraising initiatives, the national conference (September) and various events (e.g. Bloom in June). So, GIY are looking for passionate, committed volunteers who have skills in coordinating community projects – note, you do not need green fingers to do this work!

GIY Ireland is one of the fastest growing community initiatives every established in Ireland – this is an opportunity to be involved with an exciting environmental project that is changing our relationship with food.
