Friends of the Earth: Action on climate change

Getting the climate change process back on track.

Although at an international level climate negotiations stalled in Copenhagen, there are valuable opportunities for taking action on climate change in Ireland this year. Please help us take action.

The biggest contribution Ireland can make to getting the international process back on track is to pass a strong climate law at home. We have a poor track record on Kyoto, so putting a legal framework in place to systematically tackle our emissions would send out a strong signal that Ireland is finally ready to do our fair share. It would convince countries of the global south that rich countries are serious about playing their part. It would also let foreign investors know that Ireland is serious about being a hub for green enterprise and innovation.

Thanks to pressure from campaigners, the government has agreed to pass a law in 2010 and has published a framework outlining what it will look like.

Friends of the Earth has identified how the draft law needs to be strengthened to make it something we can all be proud of. Otherwise, it could well end up half-baked and half-hearted. So please take a moment to make it clear to John Gormley that only a strong law will do.
