You know that you want to do something to help make the world a better place. You might have already researched volunteering or looked for environmental groups in your local community.
However, there are a lot of ways that you can help others (and the planet!) and sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start.
If you are not sure how to make a difference in your community or in the world around you, then check out these tips from young people as inspiration. And remember, most importantly, choose an issue that YOU feel passionate about!
Think about it:
-
What needs protecting in our environment/ shared heritage? (Maybe your native woodland or lakes, ancient historical sites, townland names...)
-
What groups are discriminated against in our society? (Homeless people? Asylum seekers? Elderly people?)
-
Who is disadvantaged in our society? (Young parents?)
-
Who is misunderstood? (Young People? Travellers? Refugees?)
-
What basis services could be improved in our community? (School? Media? Gardaí? Health Service?)
-
What customs or policies work against people? (For example, homeless people are often unable to receive welfare.)
Just some of the ways we can make a positive difference:
-
We can show more respect for the dignity of people.
-
We can campaign for increased youth participation in local and national decision-making.
-
We can create new ways to volunteer and get involved in the community.
-
We can show respect for and protect the environment.
-
We can create healthier, happier lifestyles.
-
We can protect our local heritage and safeguard it for future generations.
-
We can try to understand the global dimension of local, social or environmental issues.
