Friends of the Earth campaign on climate change
See how YOU can help.
Friends of the Earth (FOE) wants to see major changes and a solid agreement on climate targets, and is campaigning to make it a reality.
Recently, a UN climate conference was held in Copenhagen, but it failed to come up with an agreement on climate change. So, another UN conference will take place in Mexico in December 2010.
Change, as they say, begins at home though, so FOE wants to make sure a strong climate law is passed in Ireland. John Gormley has confirmed that there will be a climate change law passed in Ireland this year and the government have produced a document outlining proposed changes.
There are issues with this proposed law however, and Friends of the Earth is concerned that:
- The law proposes that carbon budgets that Ireland currently have in operation are written into law. The problem with this is that the current carbon budget we have now is not strong enough. Ireland needs a better one.
- Offsetting could be used to meet government carbon targets. Offsetting is a system where the Irish government could buy “offset credits” to meet their target. Crazy, but true.
- The law must be more thorough and Friends of the Earth is calling for a more comprehensive law to be enacted.
