Fluoride Free Water campaign
Do you know what's in that glass of tap water?
Background
Ireland is one of the few countries in Europe that still has fluoride in its water supplies. In other countries, it has been removed from the water supplies due to health concerns. Fluoride was first added to water in the 1960s and it has been used here since. It was added to water because it was thought to be protective of teeth and prevent cavities. However, research in the past forty years has revealed that fluoride can actually damage people’s teeth and cause fluorosis, as well as doing damage to bone and reducing thyroid function (it used to be used as a treatment for overactive thyroid).
What is the campaign all about?
The aim is to end fluoridation of the water in Ireland for health, environmental and legal reasons. Regarding health, there is concern about the health risks to bone, the teeth and the thyroid. As to the environment, it is impacted when toxic fluoride leeches into the rivers and our food supply. Finally, it is illegal in Ireland to force Irish citizens to take a poison against their will. Fluoride is considered a poison.

- End fluoridation of our water supplies
- Repeal the Health (Fluoridation of Water supplies) Act 1960
- Propose a constitutional amendment to protect every citizen from future fluoridation
