A Spectacle of Defiance and Hope

Get involved in the Dec 3rd Spectacle!

The Spectacle of Defiance and Hope is an alliance of Dublin community groups that was formed in 2010. The alliance originally formed to protest against cuts to the youth and community sector, as well as to raise awareness of the economic inequalities in Ireland.

As part of their work, The Spectacle has been running a project called The Books of Grievances and Hope. The project idea was inspired by the story of the Lists of Grievances gathered at the beginning of the French Revolution. In those times, society was made up of three estates (segments) of society – the clergy, the royals and everyone else. In 1789, King Louis XVI called a meeting with representatives from all three estates. He told them all to bring a list of grievances with them to the meeting. So, the three estates compiled their long lists. The people wrote about issues such as the unfair tax system and high food prices and the list of grievances just got longer and longer. These Lists of Grievances played a large part in starting the French Revolution.

The Spectacle wants to mimic this idea by getting people to list their grievances in the hope that it will change things here in Ireland too. However, unlike the French Lists of Grievances, The Spectacle also wants to hear all about your hopes and dreams for the future too.

The alliance organised a Spectacle of Defiance and Hope event last year and they are planning to hold one again this year on December 3rd.

The Books of Grievances and Hope will be a big part of the event. So the alliance needs YOU to either make a book and bring it with you on the day or submit it online beforehand.

The aims of the event are to:

  • Bring together the Books of Grievances and Hope.
  • Present the books to the people.
  • Invite more contributions.
  • Hold a National Assembly based on the Grievances and Hopes.
  • Use the books to start REAL social change.
  • Lobby the government to act on these Grievances and Hopes.

The Spectacle of Defiance and Hope is a broadly based alliance of Community Organisations from Dublin and beyond. In 2010 a large number of groups came together to protest and challenge the programme of cuts that were imposed on the youth and community sector and draw attention to the savage economic injustices that were taking place in Ireland. The Spectacle is for an Ireland of true equality in the conditions of people’s lives.
