A symbol of hope

A young Irish aid worker in Ghana.

Young Mayo woman and former Galway Technical Institute student Aisling Neary is an inspiration and a symbol of hope to the Irish nation. She is a noble charity worker and is currently taking a year out of work to complete eight months of volunteer work in Ghana.

Aisling’s charitable work began last summer when she went to the small derelict community of Anyiboboe, in the district of the Ao Volta region in Ghana. As a qualified nurse, she spent two weeks in the village administering eye tests to the small poverty-stricken community. There were 113 children in this village and the Chief of the village asked her for her help.

So, when she returned to Ireland she decided to organise a team of Irish volunteers to travel back to Ghana with her to build a school and a medical centre.

In the next few months, this team will fly to Ghana to complete voluntary work with Aisling. As well as building the school and medical centre, the team will also be training and helping the young men of this impoverished village to develop practical skills in building and plastering. The men will also be earning a small wage, which be a path towards obtaining a better standard of living for themselves.

Aisling feels it is vital that the Irish nation knows that: "The volunteer workers are highly committed and put themselves forward to do this free labour. They pay for their own food and accommodation whilst in Ghana too".

It is ironic that in these recessionary times, Irish people are responding to Aisling’s work positively. However, support is still needed. Maybe people can spare a thought for Aisling and the hard work she is doing for the people of Ghana? Perhaps people will donate a small token to this noble cause instead of purchasing unwanted gifts?

The beauty students of Galway Technical Institute are certainly playing their part. Currently, the students have set up Poise Beauty Clinic where they are providing holistic and massage therapy as well as other beauty treatments. Massages are priced at €15.00 and all proceeds go to Aisling’s charity ‘Cross Cause’. The beauty salon is open from 2 -5 p.m.

Let us remind ourselves that it is esteemed and sincere people like Aisling that provide a brighter future for Ireland, as well as the rest of the world.
