Reduce car pollution

Energy saving tips to help you become a green driver.

  • If you’re stuck in traffic for more than 2 minutes, save fuel by turning off the engine.
  • Avoid making unnecessary trips by car.
  • Bad luck for boy racers, but don’t rev the engine or speed off after traffic lights or a stop. It’s safer to drive at a regular speed (accelerating and breaking gradually). Plus, you’ll use 60% less petrol.
  • Keep your car in good condition. It will last you longer and use less fuel.
  • If you’re not already using unleaded petrol, then start! If your car is from before 1991, you’ll probably need an adjustment made to the engine but this is often free. Using unleaded petrol helps reduce air pollution.
  • Demand your rights to a decent public transport system. If you don’t have regular access to public transport in your area then find out why not and make your voice heard.
  • Consider cycling or walking into school/work/college in the morning. That way you will avoid stress, traffic jams and save money. If there are no secure facilities to leave your bike, then demand them (you are entitled to this even more that a car space).
  • Buy a bike and pouch for wet gear and cycle more often. You will help save the environment, get fit and look good!
  • Enquire into getting the family car converted to bio-diesel from a sympathetic car mechanic; this works better if your car is a newer model (just witness the savings!)
  • If planning a day away somewhere with friends, family or work colleagues, organise a car pool rather than everyone travel like loners. Remember the old Irish saying 'Giorraim an beirt bóthar' ('Two shorten the road').
  • Avoid getting into the car and driving nowhere in particular when you are feeling down or in a bad mood (you’re far better and safer going for a walk instead to clear your head).
