Cut out rubbish

Reduce the amount of rubbish you throw away.

Article by : SpunOut.ie

Stop and think before you throw ANYTHING away. Could it be given to someone else or used in a different way?

  • When you go shopping, remember to bring a bag with you to carry stuff back. Get a funky backpack or shoulder bag. Or work those biceps and carry everything back in your arms, you’ll be glad when they’re toned and sexy! The point: don’t buy plastic bags as it’s a waste.
  • Choose glass bottles instead of plastic. Then recycle the glass.
  • Buy recycled toilet roll and tissues. It sounds gross but is exactly the same.
  • Don’t litter and don’t let any of your friends get away with it. If there’s a litter problem in your area, contact the local authority or county council.
  • Crush and flatten big cartons or bulky stuff before you put them in the bin.
  • Organise a spring clean up in your local area.
  • Bring as much rubbish as you can to local recycling banks.
  • Drop old (but decent) clothes and homewares to your local charity shop.
  • Have a flea market or car boot sale to make cash on things you want to get rid of.
  • Use old mags to make funky collages or greeting cards for your mates.
  • Make a funky mobile, quirky piece of art, furniture or even jewellry with random schtuff!

Cut out that packaging, would ya?!

  • Go easy on buying individually wrapped servings and if you can choose loose food (like tomatoes or peppers) buy those instead of packs of food.
  • If you carry a packed lunch or food, use a lunch box instead of plastic bags or cling wrap.
  • Ask in shops if you can leave behind extra packaging or newspaper supplements you won't read. By law they have to accept back the wrappings and packaging. The extra material should then go back to the manufacture.
  • If you get caught out and buy a plastic bag, re-use it as a bin bag or a handy waterproof cover for your bicycle seat!
