Fancy some Teaandtoast.ie
SpunOut.ie Superhero Dan O'Neill gives us the update on his project.
Dan O'Neill, one of SpunOut.ie's first Superheroes, recieved a grant to help his current affairs website, Teaandtoast.ie, get all the more tasty.

Teaandtoast.ie is a website founded in 2010 with the aim of livening up the debates going on in Ireland at the moment. It features articles by people from all walks of life, all age groups and political traditions with an emphasis on building a fairer, more democratic and more sustainable country. We believe that Irish political discussion is lacking direction and a serious analysis of how democrats should work together in creating a good society. In opening up debate, we hope to influence citizens to engage with politics and stir things up.
A report from Dan:
Receiving the Spunout.ie “Superhero Grant” was massively encouraging and since we received it, Teaandtoast.ie has continued to publish current affairs articles by young people, promoting debate and encouraging a fairer society. We were also shortlisted for The Irish Blog Awards in Belfast in the news/current affairs category and won the award for blog of the year 2011 at the Smedias in Dublin.
The first €50 has been assigned to hosting the site next year as Teaandtoast.ie has now been online for 8 months. Hence, our current hosting will be cancelled in 4 months. When we initially set up the site, we had a fundraiser in a pub and managed to raise the money to cover the set up costs of the site. Having this money set aside will ensure a smooth transition into the next 12 months and any additional funds we raise through any future fundraisers can be invested into more events.
In June, we will be changing the layout of Teaandtoast.ie making it more user friendly and more accessible. We have set aside €70 to cover the cost of purchasing a professional “theme.” As the site is run in the Wordpress platform this should be fairly straightforward.
The Smedia Awards charged a fee to enter the competition which came to €36 which we have factored in to the costings. The Irish Blog Awards also charged €45 (3 tickets @ €15) to attend coupled with accommodation costs etc. but we funded that out of our own money. Both of these events gave us the opportunity to promote the project.
The last two costings are the most exciting. We are currently organising an event under the theme “Political Activism Through Writing.” Basically, we are going to run a media training day for contributors and other interested people to teach them some basic media skills and also promote teaandtoast.ie’s mission.
