Story...
SpunOut.ie, supported by one of our brilliant funders (The Atlantic Philanthropies), is launching a brand spanking new youth grants scheme to help all you super-heroes out there make a positive difference in brining about a better Ireland.
Read on for details....
Why?
- Because we know YOU are all full of ideas, full of potential, and full (overflowing even!) with the desire to do something to make Ireland better... and we all know she could use some work!
- Because we know a lot of us are unemployed at the moment and have some time on your hands
- Because we know that most of us are a bit strapped for cash
- Because we know that people power is the only real way to change anything and you are people and we need change :-)
- Because one election won’t solve this stuff, so WE VOTE FOR YOU! You might be totally sick of elections and politicians! We feel your pain! HOWEVER (and it is a big however) voting and politicians are just one small part of what makes societies TICK (thick?) and we know that if we want real change, we need to get stuck in to making things happen ourselves in small ways or big. So we are voting for YOU with these grants! G’wan, YOU can do it!
‘SpunOut.ie Superhero Grants!’
What is it???
These action grants are open to any of YOU who have a great idea for an event or project that will lead to positive social change. We have 10 action grants of €250 each available with very few strings attached and they are available to YOU to help you get your many ideas for positive happenings off the ground.
Your project could be as simple as...
- you could publish a mag on issues that concern you
- organise a gig to raise awareness for something you care about
- do something thoughtful for all the people standing in the dole queue
- shoot a vid about an issue that matters that you can spread around Facebook
- run a community forum and tell all the newly elected politicians just what they should be doing for young people
- put on an ethical fashion show
- screen an inspiring film in a public place (don’t forget the popcorn!)
- put on social justice play or an art exhibit
- host a street feast
- organise a community clean-up
- put on a talk by someone you think your mates should hear
- organise training on something you think you and your community need to learn
- start a campaign to make the youth vote count
- make a radio documentary for your college station
- go mainstream and arrange for all your mates to go and participate as the audience on one of the political telly programmes
...to name just a few... but sure dive into your own think tank and see what ya come up with...
And even better still...
- All Superheroes who get a grant and complete their project are entered into a competition to be named 'SpunOut.ie Superhero of the Year 2011' for which there is a prize fund of €500!!!
- All Superheroes get a pack with some SpunOut.ie gear and a how-to guide for making social justice projects happen
- All Superheroes are invited and given free tickets to SpunOut.ie’s biggest public event yet - The ‘Possibilities Summit’

And one more thing...
Don’t worry about failure! Even with the most careful planning, sometimes there is no way of knowing if something is going to work or not until you try it. As long as we’re sure you’re going to put your imagination, energy and best effort into these social change projects we are happy as Larry that good will come of this even if all you learn is how not to do it next time... good will come... go forth and imagine and apply...
