Tell the government to take action on suicide
SpunOut.ie blog: It's time for political parties to make a commitment on suicide prevention.
As a member of The Action on Suicide Alliance, SpunOut.ie is calling for greater action and awareness in preventing suicide in Ireland.
The Action on Suicide Alliance has launched a nationwide campaign challenging political parties and independents to make clear commitments and take action on suicide prevention. The campaign is running high profile print adverts throughout the national and regional press in the lead up to the elections.
Around 500 people in Ireland die annually through suicide, of which 50% are under 25 years old and mostly men, making suicide the number one killer of Ireland’s young men.
YOU can call the government to take action on suicide by signing the online petition at www.actiononsuicide.ie
The Action On Suicide Alliance includes: 3TS, Amnesty International Irish Section, Bodywhys – The Eating Disorder Association of Ireland, Console, Irish Advocacy Network, Mental Health Reform, Let’s Get Together Foundation, Living Links, Schizophrenia Ireland, SpunOut.ie, and Teen-Line Ireland.

SpunOut at the YSI
SpunOut.ie Blog: Energy and serious ooooooomph factor from Ireland's Young Social Innovators!
The Young Social Innovators Showcase (YSI) 2007 took place in Dublin on May 9th and 10th and I was there to check it out and represent SpunOut.ie. This was my first ever YSI and I have to say I was more than surprised!

The first thing that struck me as I entered was the amazing buzz floating around the arena. I was hit with splashes of colour, laughter, resourcefulness, originality, enthusiasm and talent. Work, energy and serious ooooooomph had gone into every single stall that I passed by It was just fantastic to see.

The Young Social Innovators aims to develop social awareness and activism amongst the youth of Ireland. Students choose a topic they feel could in effect generate social change. The theme chosen is then thoroughly investigated and researched. Original and innovative ideas to help resolve the problem are created by each team, generating positive social change.

Action and power! In working together so much can be achieved. I think it’s easy to sit back and think ‘well what can I do? What difference can one person make?’ Thankfully not everyone thinks like that or the world would be a horrific place to live in. The fact is we can all make a difference. It’s a case of getting up off our asses like the young social innovators and doing something to help make a change in all of our lives.

Rockin' office launch for Community Creations!
SpunOut.ie Blog: Check out the pics from the launch of SpunOut.ie headquarters.
As you can see from the snazzy pics below, the launch of SpunOut.ie's new head office in Galway was a brilliant evening of celebration for everyone at the event. Galway Mayor Niall Ó Brolcháin carried out the opening ceremony and officially welcomed the SpunOut.ie team to the city!
Community Creations and SpunOut.ie founder Ruairí McKiernan said that Galway was the obvious choice for a new national office. "Galway is buzzing with progressive ideas, people and possibilities. The city is youthful, vibrant and creative, making it the perfect place for us".
Ruairí and the rest of the crew (Anna, Sean, Susie and Anthony) look forward to working in Galway and have major plans for working with young writers, activists and media makers as well as youth, health, education and community agencies.
