SpunOut.ie joined calls for 'action on suicide'
Getting together to take action.
SpunOut.ie joined forces with the 3Ts, Console, Teenline and other non-profit agencies in calling for greater action and awareness in preventing suicide in Ireland.
The groups spoke alongside representatives of the National Office for Suicide Prevention and the main political parties at the ‘Action on Suicide’ rally in Dublin’s Mansion House on Wednesday the 28th of February.
Almost 500 Irish people die from suicide each year and it is the leading cause of death in young people under 24. Suicide rates for men aged 25 to 29 have more than doubled in the 10 years since 1999 and the number of young women aged 15 – 24 who have died as a result of suicide has trebled from 1990 to 2004.
Representing SpunOut.ie was Founder/ Coordinator Ruairí McKiernan and Youth Editor Ian Howley. In their presentation they outlined the positive contribution SpunOut.ie is making in supporting young people in Ireland, the need to fund proven services like this and the need to listen to and involve young people in decision making.
An online petition was also be launched on the day at www.actiononsuicide.ie
