SpunOut, part of the Community Creations social change organisation, uses social media to empower young people aged 16-25 with information, support and opportunities.
Founded by a group of young graduates in Donegal in 2004 with the support of youth and health services, and now based in the Temple Bar area of Dublin, SpunOut has gone from a struggling bedroom venture to becoming one of Ireland’s most effective & innovative non-profit organisations, employing 7 full time people, reaching over 50,000 unique users online each month and winning widespread praise, support and awards along the way.
Supporting and empowering young people
At a time when Ireland so desperately needs the energy, ideas and skills of its youth, SpunOut offers a unique platform for youth empowerment. It features several thousand health and lifestyle factsheets on everything from drugs and drink, to sex and politics, in addition to signposting to support services, moderated discussion forums, a youth media publishing space, and campaigns and events for youth rights and support.
A movement for change
More recently SpunOut launched the Academy of Youth Activism which provides free practical ‘tools for change’ campaign training, in addition to ‘SpunOut Youth Summits’ and ‘SpunOut Super-hero’ micro grants scheme for young activists and innovators.
The organisation is a registered charity and is part funded by a mix of philanthropic, state and community funding, although all sources have recently decreased despite the widespread success of the service.
SpunOut.ie is appealing for people from all walks of life to get behind the initiative and to work together in building a much needed revolution where young people are truly valued, respected, listened to and involved.
